How Often Should You Have Your Wood Stove and Chimney Swept?
Solid fuel appliances are known for their high quality, robust construction and long-term durability. But like anything in continuous use, they need a little care to keep working safely and at their best. A regular sweep and service is the simplest way to protect your stove, your home and your family, and it's a job worth understanding rather than just booking blindly. So here's the what, the why and the how often.
How often should you have your stove and chimney swept?
As a general rule, at least once a year, and in any case straight after your first burn season. If you burn wood rather than smokeless fuel, or you use your stove heavily, you may need it done more often, twice a year is common for regular wood burners.
The reason comes down to what happens inside your flue. Every time you burn, the process leaves behind soot, tar and creosote on the inside of the chimney. Left to build up, those deposits are what fuel a chimney fire, and they also eat away at your liner and make your stove harder to run. A yearly sweep clears them out before they become a problem.
Signs your chimney needs sweeping
Your annual sweep is the baseline, but it's worth knowing the signs that your stove or chimney needs attention sooner:
- Smoke coming back into the room when you light the fire, rather than drawing up the chimney
- The fire is harder to get going, or won't burn as fiercely as it used to
- A strong, tarry smell from the stove or fireplace
- Dark staining or debris falling into the grate
- You simply can't remember when it was last done
If you recognise any of these, it's worth booking a sweep sooner rather than waiting for the annual date to come round.
Why an annual sweep is worth it
A regular sweep does more than tick a box. It:
- Removes the soot, tar and creosote that build up inside your flue, the single most effective way to minimise the risk of a chimney fire
- Slows the corrosion of your liner, helping it last longer
- Keeps your stove and liner warranties valid, most manufacturers require evidence of professional sweeping
- Supports any house insurance claim you might need to make
- Improves how your stove and chimney perform, so you get more heat from your fuel
Chimney fires are almost always preventable, and this matters more than many people realise. Around 42% of chimney fires happen between January and March, when stoves are working hardest, yet nearly one in ten stove owners leave it two years or more between sweeps, or never sweep at all. A yearly sweep is the simplest way to stay on the right side of that statistic.
What does a proper service involve?
A good service is about far more than running a brush up the chimney. You then get a written certificate covering the condition of your stove, which is useful for your records, your insurance and if you ever come to sell your home.

A word on carbon monoxide
Gas isn't the only fuel that produces carbon monoxide. Solid fuel and wood burning appliances produce it too, and because it's colourless, odourless and tasteless, a working alarm is the only reliable way to detect it. Early symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning can be mistaken for everyday ailments like tiredness, headaches or flu, which is exactly why a working alarm matters so much.
We'd always encourage every stove owner to have a carbon monoxide alarm in the same room as their stove, and we recommend one in every room the chimney passes through as well. In Wales, a working carbon monoxide alarm in those spaces is now a legal requirement. We check your alarm as part of every service, we sell them in our showroom, and we carry them on our vans.
