Looking after the heart of your home
For many people a stove is far more than a way to heat a room. It's an investment, a focal point, the place the family gathers on a cold evening, and for some homes it's the main source of warmth right through the winter. Like anything that works hard for you, a stove gives its best when it's properly looked after.
Regular stove servicing and maintenance keeps your stove burning safely and efficiently, helps it last for many more years, and means you always know exactly what condition it's in. It's a small amount of care that protects something you've invested in and rely on.
For stove owners, by stove specialists
Here's what makes us a little different. We aren't only a chimney sweep, we're a stove installation company, and we've been fitting stoves across the region for over 22 years. We understand them inside out.
That matters when it comes to servicing. Because we know how a stove is built and how it should perform, we notice the things a general sweep might not, and we can explain clearly what we're seeing and why it matters. And if something does need attention, whether that's worn fire bricks, tired door seals, or a question about your liner, we're able to put it right there and then, because looking after stoves is exactly what we do.
When a Green Man engineer services your stove, you have a specialist in your home who knows your appliance from the inside out.

Why a regular service is worth it
We're not here to worry anyone into a service. A stove should bring warmth and comfort to your home, and that's just how it should feel. But a little regular care brings some very real benefits:
Safety
Solid fuel and wood burning appliances produce carbon monoxide, so a clean, clear flue and sound seals matter. Regular sweeping also removes the soot, tar and creosote that build up inside your flue, which is the single most effective way to minimise the risk of a chimney fire. A well maintained stove is a safe one, and we'll always let you know if we spot anything that needs attention.
Efficiency
A stove that's serviced and swept burns more cleanly and gives out more heat for the fuel you put in, which is better for your home and for your fuel bills.
Longevity
Clearing tar and creosote and keeping seals and controls in good order helps protect your stove and your liner, so you get many more years of use from them.
Insurance, house sales, and lined chimneys
A few practical things worth knowing.
While there's no law requiring you to have your stove swept, a recent sweep certificate can matter a great deal if you ever need to claim. In the event of a fire or fault, your insurer may ask for evidence that your stove and chimney have been properly maintained. It's also a condition of most flue liner and stove manufacturers' warranties that you can show evidence of professional sweeping, in the form of a certificate, if you ever need to make a warranty claim.
If you come to sell your home, surveyors will often ask to see your most recent sweep certificate. Keeping up with an annual service means you'll always have one to hand.
It's also worth being aware that in Wales a working carbon monoxide alarm is now required in every space that your chimney or flue system passes through, not only the room the stove sits in. We'll always check your alarm as part of a service and let you know if you need another fitted.
And one common misunderstanding worth clearing up: even if your chimney is lined, it still needs sweeping. Deposits build up inside a liner just as they do in any flue, and left unchecked they can shorten the life of a liner that wasn't cheap to fit.
22 years, one local team
We've been installing and maintaining stoves across Herefordshire, Monmouthshire and Gloucestershire since 2003, with HETAS, OFTEC, Which? Trusted Trader, Stove Industry Alliance and FSB accreditation behind the work. Those credentials tell you the job is being done properly, by people who know exactly what they're doing.
What's harder to put on a badge is the way we work. You'll know our team by name. (We'll know your dogs by name too.) From the first visit to every annual sweep that follows, you'll be dealing with the same local, friendly team.
Your local stove service and chimney sweep
We look after stoves right across the region, including Ross-on-Wye, Hereford, Ledbury, Leominster, the Forest of Dean, Coleford, Cinderford, Monmouth, Abergavenny and the surrounding towns and villages of Herefordshire, Gloucestershire and Monmouthshire. As a local, HETAS-registered team you'll get a friendly face who knows the area, not a faceless call centre. If you're not sure whether you're in our patch, just give us a call and we'll let you know.
When to book your service
We recommend a service and sweep at least once a year, and ideally at the end of the burn season rather than waiting until the colder months come round again. Sweeping in spring or summer clears away the winter's tar and creosote straight away, rather than leaving it to sit against your liner over the warmer months. It also means you're booked in well before the autumn rush, so your stove is ready the moment you want that first fire of the season.
If you've recently moved into a home with an existing stove, or your lined chimney is a few years old, a CCTV camera inspection is a great way to get complete peace of mind about its condition. Just ask and we'll be glad to talk it through.
What our customers say
“The chimney sweep arrived bang on time, spread out a large sheet and got to work straight away. There was no mess, and I was advised that the stove was working well and the carbon monoxide alarm was fully functioning. All completed well within half an hour. Very pleased with the job.”

Quick answers
How often should I have my stove swept and serviced?
At least once a year for most stoves, and ideally at the end of the burn season. If you use your stove heavily we may suggest sweeping more often, and we'll advise you based on what we find.
Do I still need my chimney swept if it's lined?
Yes. Deposits build up inside a liner just as they do in any flue, so a lined chimney still needs regular sweeping to stay safe and to protect the liner.
How much does a stove service and sweep cost?
Our full stove service and chimney sweep is £90 inc VAT, which includes a written certificate on the condition of your stove. Any replacement parts, such as fire rope or fire bricks, are charged separately and we'll always talk them through with you first.
Do you sweep open fires?
No, we specialise in wood burning and multi fuel stoves, so our service is tailored specifically to stove owners.
Will I get a certificate?
Yes. Every service includes a written certificate covering the condition of your stove and its fire bricks, which is useful for your own records, for insurance, and if you ever come to sell your home.
