The Ecodesign Ready Scheme is a new landmark in the increasing environmental benefits of wood burning stoves. Air quality is important to all of us. Even though wood burning stoves are a relatively low source of emissions, the Stove Industry Alliance feel it is important to reduce emissions from wood burning stoves even further. This has got to be good – cleaner emissions also means less yucky stuff going up into your flue which means it will last longer and you will reduce your risk of chimney fires. This is, of course, also dependent upon what fuel you choose to burn and indeed how, you use your stove. Whilst this isn’t rocket science, many of our customers have been using stoves for years and whilst, hopefully, they haven’t managed to burn their house down in that time (!) we, all of us, can always learn new stuff and we have the knowledge to help you use your stove more efficiently, save you money on fuel costs and eke as many years out of that expensive liner that no one ever sees!
Ecodesign is the European-wide programme to lower emissions. It is due to come into force in the UK in 2022. The main manufacturers in the SIA have decided to release stoves that will meet the lower emission limits now, and from 2020 to only manufacture wood-burning stoves that meet the new Ecodesign criteria, two years ahead of schedule.
As with HD ready TVs the Ecodesign Ready label will inform consumers that the stove will meet the new stringent emission limits.
The Ecodesign Ready scheme is supported by DEFRA and the SIA Ecodesign Ready label will set the standard for the most environmentally friendly stoves available today.
The scheme is being overseen by HETAS, who will independently verify that the stoves pass the Ecodesign tests. The stoves will also appear in the HETAS Guide with the Ecodesign Ready label.
